National Eligibility Test 2018 or NET 2018 is a national level exam conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education on behalf of University Grants Commission(UGC). This national level test is a qualifying exam for lectureship in universities. It is also mandatory for some research programs.

  • CBSE UGC NET 2018 will consist of Multiple-choice questions.
  • There is no negative marking in this exam. It is divided into three papers.
  • Paper 1 consists of Mathematics, LR and teaching aptitude and is common for all candidates.
  • Paper -II and Paper -III is based on the subject that the candidate is appearing for.
  • The exam is held twice in a year - once in July and then in January.
  • The medium of exam is bilingual - Hindi or English.
  • All three papers are held on the same day. The exam usually begins at 9:30 in the morning.
  • Candidates are not allowed to exit the exam centre after Paper – I.
  • Only after the completion of Paper - II will candidates be allowed a break for lunch. They have to report back at the exam centre 30 minutes before the start of Paper -III.

CBSE UGC NET 2018 Exam Pattern

UGC NET 2018 is essential for candidates trying for lectureship positions. It also exempts students from having to complete an M.Phil degree as many universities in India provide eligibility relaxation to students who have cleared NET.

CBSE UGC NET 2018 consists of only Multiple-Choice Questions. It has three parts - Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3. Paper 1 or the General Paper consists of questions based on mathematics, logical reasoning and teaching aptitude. It is common for all the candidates. Paper 2 and Paper 3 are subject papers and test the expertise of the candidate in the related subject.

  • The test will be pen and paper based.
  • Candidates will have to fill in their answer in the OMR sheets provided by circling the right number.
  • They will be provided a black ball point pen to circle their choices.

CBSE UGC NET 2018 Marking Scheme

As already discussed above, the Test will consist of three papers. All the three papers will consist of only objective type questions and will be held on July 2018 in three separate session as under:

  • First (Paper 1): 100 Marks (60 out of which 50 questions to be attempted) [Duration: 1¼ Hours (09.30 am to 10.45 am, IST)]
  • Second (Paper 2): 100 Marks (50 questions all are compulsory) [Duration: 1¼ Hours (11.15 am to 12.30 pm, IST)]
  • Third (Paper 3): 150 Marks (75 questions all are compulsory) [Duration: 2½ Hours (02.00 pm to 04.30 pm, IST)]


  • All the questions of Paper 2and Paper 3 will be compulsory, covering entire syllabus (including all electives, without options)
  • The candidate will have to mark the responses for questions of Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III on the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) Sheet provided along with the test booklet
  • There is no negative marking in any of the papers

CBSE UGC NET 2018 Syllabus

UGC CBSE NET Exam Syllabus is varied and depends on the subject that the candidate has selected. This is the reason why candidates are advised to write their exam in their Masters subject.

Since the eligibility criteria for NET exam is a Masters’ degree. It is essential that candidates revise their Bachelors and Masters syllabus thoroughly and are aware of the research advances in their field.

Candidates should try and solve model question papers and go through previous years’ question papers.

  • For Paper 1, the syllabus includes teaching and research aptitude - Questions on Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Teaching Aptitude will be asked.
  • For Paper 2 and Paper 3, the syllabus will be related to the subject, so a thorough revision of Bachelors and Masters syllabus will help the students clear this exam

The first and the foremost step should be to get the complete information about the course and the exam including its syllabus, paper pattern, time duration, its purpose, etc.

  • The next step is to look for previous years question papers and try to solve them as it will help the candidates judge the difficulty level of the exam.
