UPSC IES 2018 Answer Keys of GS

UPSC has fixed the minimum qualifying marks for different category participating candidates. Candidates of General, OBC, SC, ST category will have to secure 15% marks i.e. (75 out of 500) whereas, PH category candidates have to obtain 10% marks (50 out of 500) in order to eligible for mains exam.

UPSC IES Prelims Answer Key 2018

Before the announcement of the result, IES Prelims 2018 answer key will be released through online mode only. It helps students to calculate their score and evaluate their performance. According to the IES marking scheme, for every correct answer, 2 marks will be awarded. For the wrong answer, 0.33 marks will be deducted.

Students can download IES Prelims 2018 Answer Key by following below steps:

  • Visit the official website of UPSC i.e. upsc.gov.in
  • Click on the “Answers Key” in the Examination tab.
  • Students will be redirected to another page.
  • Click on the stream wise UPSC IES Answer Key 2018 link.
  • After clicking on the link, a PDF file will be displayed on the screen.
  • Students are advised to download and take the printout of answer key for future reference.

UPSC IES Prelims 2018 Paper Analysis

The paper consists of both the descriptive and objective type questions. Negative marking will also apply for the wrong answer. Students who clear the Prelims exam will only able to appear for Mains examination.

IES Prelims exam consists of two papers i.e. Paper I and Paper II. Following is the detailed explanation of IES Prelims 2018 exam:

  • In 2017, the rotational shift has moved towards Indian Polity and Governance in place of Economic and Social Development.
  • History, Geography, Environment, and Science & Tech maintained their importance and visibility in terms of number of questions asked.
  • Current affairs have also moved towards (Direct approach) in place of more inclination towards (Indirect influence) in 2018. All in all, it remains a major anchor.

Sectional Evaluation

History of India and Indian National Movement (Difficulty level: High)

The questions were asked from the core subject so much so that this time questions were also asked from prominent Acts. For e.g. questions on Factories Act, Trade Disputes Act, etc.

Indian Polity & Governance (Difficulty level: Moderate)

Economic and Social Development (Difficulty level: Moderate)

  • In the questions on Economy, the factual element was higher for e.g. questions on TFA ratification date, fund value of NIIF, question on NPS, etc.
  • Focused on prominent contemporary issues of last couple of years for e.g. questions on Small Finance Banks, NPCI on financial inclusion, BTIA etc.
  • In all, Finance and Banking, Government Budgeting and International Economics remained focused areas in this section.

Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change (Difficulty level: Moderate)

  • Biodiversity based questions for example questions ongharial, lion translocation, m-stripes, etc.  This has been a trend of past couple of years.
  • National parks and Tiger reserves remain important.
  • International organizations remain important (TRAFFIC, Global Climate Change Alliance)

Science and Technology (Difficulty level: Moderate)

The questions on Science and Technology were clearly focused on application of Science in day to day life. Hence, most of the questions were directly from current affairs and were moderate in answering after logical deduction.


UPSC IES Prelims Cut off 2018

Cut off marks are the minimum marks scored by the candidate in order to qualify the examination. Cut off will be declared by Union Public Service Commission after the announcement of final result. IES 2018 cut off will declare in the Third week of September 2018.  

Cut off marks will be decided on the basis of various factors which are listed below:

  • Total number of students appearing for the test
  • Number of vacancies
  • Difficulty level of the exam
  • Previous year cut off trends
