Study Plan and Strategy to Ace IES 2018 Exam

The rigorous practice and a good preparation strategy guarantee success in the IES exam. The exam has both objective and conventional type questions hence theory, conceptual knowledge, and problem-solving techniques are equally important. Listed below are pointers that will help in preparing better for IES 2018:

Know IES Exam Pattern: Get acquainted with the latest examination pattern and syllabus of the exam. It is important to have clear knowledge about the technical & non-technical questions that will be asked, negative marks, weightage, exam duration, and marks per question. Check IES Syllabus

Time Management: While preparing for ESE, time management is very essential. The first step should be to make a time table. It should be made according to your comfort and as per the weightage of each topic. Also, make sure to follow it religiously.

Suggestion: Take one subject from each section of technical subjects and devote at least 3 hours daily to it. Also, try to devote 1 hour each to English and General Studies to prepare well for Paper 1.

Make Short-term study plans: Prepare short-term study plans. Execute and make them the long-term goals to succeed in the examination. While studying the technical subjects don’t forget to make short notes of important topics. Also, make a separate list of formulae for each subject. Later you can revise the short notes and formulae list daily.

Section wise preparation tips for IES

There are two sections in the IES paper. Each section needs focus and balanced preparation to crack the exam. The section-wise preparation tips for IES 2018 are given below:

IES General Studies Section

General ability paper carries 300 marks. It is the most scoring section. General Study preparation also plays an important role in personal interviews.

  • From section of general studies, find out your areas of interest and study in the form of a story to correlate the topics. This will help in easy understanding of the topics.
  • Read Newspapers, articles, watch the news, and surf the internet to prepare for the general ability section. The current affairs coverage of 45 days prior to the commencement date of the exam is important.
  • Solve all the previous question papers of General studies to know the main areas/ streams from where questions are asked.
  • The next step is to prepare the portion of English. Solve at least 10 to 15 questions daily based on finding errors and rearrangement of sentences to score well in English.
  • While preparing for English, segregate vocabulary from the previous 10 years of papers of Engineering Services Examination and try to memorize and revise at least 20 words daily.

IES Engineering Aptitude Section

Engineering Aptitude section of Paper 1 covers Logical reasoning, Analytical ability, Engineering Mathematics, and Numerical Analysis. Following are some points to prepare these sections better:

  • Learn and use short techniques for numerical questions solving instead of the traditional approach. It will save you a good time during the exam.
  • For Logical Reasoning questions, aspirants should try to develop an analytical thought process and thorough practice.
  • Candidates should solve as many papers as they can to score better for Engineering Mathematics and Analytical ability sections.

IES Engineering Discipline Section

Candidates are required to have an excellent base in their core engineering subjects in order to clear the second paper of the preliminary exam. The branches are as follows:

1) Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering,

2) Electrical Engineering,

3) Mechanical Engineering and

4) Civil Engineering.

The following points should be remembered while preparing for your engineering discipline:

  • Clear your basic concepts in the core subjects of your branch with intense knowledge of the main areas, and with clear concepts.
  • Reference books for derivations, equations, and theory, etc can prove to be an excellent source for preparations.
  • It is advisable not to refer several books for the same topic, rather it is better to refer to one good book which clarifies basic concepts.

IES Conventional or Subjective Paper Section

Good writing skills, excellent presentation, subjective theory, explanations, derivations, diagrams and equations will fetch you good marks in the conventional or subjective paper. For making conventional portion strong and scoring good marks, keep in mind these points:

  • Try to solve at least 5 questions daily from the previous 10 years' papers and solve expected conventional questions from the topics taken up the same day.
  • Improve presentation skills while writing an answer and also enhance the writing skills along with keeping an eye on mistakes made during writing an answer.
  • Time management in the conventional exam is very important.

IES Personal Interview Round

Personal Interview is the last stage of the IES selection procedure. In order to clear the interview, make sure you have excellent technical knowledge in your core subjects. Apart from this, listed below are some generalized points for preparing personal interview:

  • It is important to have a positive attitude and a confident body language at the time of the IES Interview.
  • Good communication skills, knowledge about current affairs also plays an important role to clear the round.
