IES exam comprises two written exams and one personality test round. The written exam consists of 2 sections- objective paper and conventional paper. The preliminary exam consists of questions from General Studies and Engineering Aptitude worth 500 marks and Mains paper consists of questions from Electrical Engineering worth 600 marks.

IES Exam Pattern describes the complete question paper pattern, weightage and time duration for each of the exam papers. A candidate must clear all the 3 rounds of IES to be able to get recruited.

IES for Electrical Engineer will be held in two papers. IES Prelims and IES Mains. Candidates who qualify the preliminary round will be eligible to sit for the Mains examination. Candidates must qualify both the stages of written test to be eligible for next round of selection process i.e. Personality Test.

IES (Indian Engineering Service) is a national level exam conducted by UPSC (Union Public Services Commission). It is conducted for recruitment to the various posts in Indian Engineering Services. Recruitment for core engineering fields such as, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electrical and Telecommunication Engineering will be done on the basis on this exam.

IES 2017 Exam Pattern for Prelims

  • IES exam pattern for preliminary examination is same for all the streams in IES.
  • This stage consists of 2 papers- General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper and Electrical Engineering Paper. These are conducted in two different sessions.
  • The question paper consists of MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions).
  • The distribution of marks is 200+300 (500 marks).
  • The duration of these papers is 2 hours (paper 1) and 3 hours (paper 2) respectively for IES Prelims.

IES 2017 Exam Pattern for Mains

  • IES Mains consists of 2 papers which are subjective in nature and are conducted in different sessions.
  • Both papers are based on Electrical Engineering
  • The marks will be distributed equally among both papers i.e. 300 each.
  • Candidates will get the time limit of 3 hours for each paper.

IES 2017 Final Round Selection Process

Candidates who will successfully qualify both written tests, will be called for final round of selection process i.e. Personality Test. This round carries 200 marks. The level of this round is not that tough.

As part of the Personal Interview, a candidate may have to face a panel of 4 or more interviewers. The questions asked in interview round may be about Personal life, Educational Qualification, Extra-curricular activities, work experience, outlook on contemporary issues, etc.

The technique of the interview is not that of a strict cross examination but of a natural, though directed and purposive conversation which is intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate. The marks of interview round are added to marks obtained by candidate in the written round.
