Indian Engineering Services (IES Exam) also known as Engineering Services Exam is a national level entrance exam organized by UPSC (Union Public Service Exam). It is a gateway of various posts in Indian Engineering Services in government departments. Every year, around 1 lakh students (approx.) sit for IES Exam and only 0.5% of them qualify for the Prestigious Engineering Services Exam.
Thus, you can imagine how difficult it is to get selected in Central government departments through ESE. Also, the number of vacancies in ESE is close to 600. Among 1 lakh students, this number is less than 0.7%. Looking at these figures, it becomes evident that, if your aim is to get into these departments, you will have to work really hard.
IES (Indian Engineering Services) are the civil services that meet the technical functions of the Government of India. The government of India recruits its civil servants and officials on the basis of merit. These positions in the bureaucracy are filled through competitive exams. Large numbers of candidates apply for these exams, competing for limited posts. IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by UPSC.
