IES 2017: Check expected and previous year’s IES Cutoff

Indian Engineering Services or IES officers are the civil services that meet the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India. IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A combined three-staged competitive examination (comprising five tests), is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.

UPSC has released the cut off for IES 2016. In this article, we are providing some useful information regarding IES Cut Off. Candidates can refer to these previous years’ cutoff to analyze the expected cutoff for IES 2017. But before that, candidates must learn about the different stages of IES 2017.


IES 2017 Selection Criteria

The IES exam is conducted in four stages. They have been described below:

First stage

The first day is allocated for general ability paper. This exam is of two hours in duration. This exam consists of general English and general studies of total 200 marks. The second day is allocated for the objective technical papers (2nd and 3rd). There is one objective exam for each paper separately and each being of 2 hours in duration. Each paper is of 200 marks.

Second stage

The third day is allocated for the conventional technical papers (4th and 5th). There is one subjective exam for each paper separately and each being of 3 hours in duration. Each paper is of 200 marks.  The conventional answer sheets of a candidate are evaluated only when he/she qualifies the objective examination.

Third stage

The third stage is interview. Candidates who qualify the written exam are called for the interview. Interview carries 200 marks. The objective of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a carrier in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The test is intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.


IES 2017 Expected Cut Off

The expected cut off for candidates belonging to General/SC/ST/OBC in the preliminary examination could be 15% marks out of total 600 marks. However, it could be 10% for the candidates belonging to PH category. In the written stage, the candidates belonging to general and OBC might have to score 15% while the cut off could be 10% and 5% for SC/ST and PH categories respectively.


IES Cutoff 2016

The cut off for 2016 was released by UPSC. The minimum qualifying marks is considered as the cut off. Those who clear the cut off at every stage are eligible for appointment.  There is different cut off marks for different category candidates.

Objective stage

The objective paper was of 600 marks. The category and discipline wise cutoff is given below:
