Role of Border Security Force (BSF)

In Peace Time

  • Promote a sense of security among the people living in the border areas.
  • Prevent trans-border crimes, unauthorized entry into or exit from the territory of India.
  • Prevent smuggling and any other illegal activity.

In War Time

  • Holding ground in less threatened sectors so long as the main attack does not develop in a particular sector and it is felt that the local situation is within the capability of BSF to deal with.
  • Protection of vital installations particular air-fields against enemy commandoes /paratroopers or raids.
  • Providing extension to the flanks of the main defence line by the holding of strong points in conjunction with other units.
  • Limited Aggressive action against paramilitary or irregular forces of the enemy within the overall plan of the Armed Forces.
  • Performing special tasks connected with intelligence including raids.
  • Provision of escorts, Guarding of prisoners of war cages, Anti - infiltration duties in the specified area etc.

Role of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

  • Overall co-ordination of large scale security arrangement especially with regard to elections in disturbed areas.

  • Security to sensitive installations, banks and protected persons.
  • Restore and preserve order in any area in the events of disturbances.

Role of Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB)

  • Safeguard the security of assigned borders of India and promote a sense of security among the people living in border areas.
  • Prevent trans-border crimes, smuggling, and any other illegal activities.
  • Prevent unauthorized entry into or exit from the territory of India.
  • Carry out civic action programmes in the area of responsibility.
  • Perform any other duty assigned by the Central Government.

Ques. Does CAPF AC get a pension?

Ans. For CAPF, the Seventh Pay Commission has advocated one-rank one-pension formula. The panel also recommended 'martyr' status for any officers of CAPF who die in the line of duty, on par with the armed forces, and their families will now get ex-gratia of Rs 25-45 lakh.

Other than a pension, the pay panel suggested a uniform retirement age for all paramilitary forces personnel at 60 years.

Ans. Central Reserve Police Force – CISF is known as the best force among all under CAPF branches. Before it was known as Crown Representative's Police. It became CRPF after the enactment of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.
