UPSC CAPF Selection Process includes written test, physical & medical standards test, physical efficiency test (popularly known as PET), personality test and interview. The rigorous tiers of examination serve as elimination at each round until few remain after interview to be recommended for the position of Assistant Commandants.

  • The first round, written examination, involves test of general thinking, general studies, essay writing and comprehension based questions.
  • Candidates who qualify the written test are then asked to fill DAF (Detailed Application Form) and issued the call letter for physical efficiency test (PET) and medical standards test.
  • Another list of qualified candidates is prepared after PET and candidates are put through the final round of interview and personality test.

The selection procedure for CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) is conducted by Union Public Service Commission. UPSC CAPF is conducted for the post of Assistant Commandants. There are five forces that comprise CAPF and where entry is earned through UPSC CAPF. These are Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

This particular article aims to give insight into the UPSC CAPF interview. Candidates may find it helpful for preparation to know the type of questions asked during the interview round of UPSC CAPF.

Questions asked in UPSC CAPF Interview

UPSC CAPF interview questions cover the wide spectrum ranging from personal to current affairs. The Detailed Application Form (DAF) which candidates fill after written examination is the basis of many questions. A candidate might be asked the reason for choosing a particular hobby or might be tasked to mention specialty about his/her hometown. The purpose of asking such questions is to test the self-awareness of a candidate. At times these questions become a test to check the candidate’s response to pressure situation and ability to think on feet. Consider the following scenario:

A candidate named Siddharth, who appears for an interview of UPSC CAPF 2019, may very likely be asked to talk about other famous people sharing the name Siddharth and the contribution of such people towards history, India, and mankind. Although this appears to be an absurd line of a question. In fact, a candidate named Ashok has been asked about the significance of Ashok Chakra as the opening of his interview. Hence, it’ll be a good idea to prepare yourself well on the personal front.

Since the examination is about armed forces of the country, questions related to it are inevitable. Popular interview questions include candidates being asked:

  • To differentiate between paramilitary, military and CAPF
  • To mention problems of CAPF and ways to tackle them
  • To specify hierarchy of all forces
  • To rank CRPF, CISF, BSF, ITBP and SSB according to preference

Such questions are put to check the willingness of a candidate towards CAPF.

Current affairs questions form a big chunk of the interview questions. The questions are designed to expose the awareness of a candidate. Candidate’s knowledge is not the only thing tested during interview but also his/her opinion. For example if the interviewer asks about demonetization, questions may take following form:

  • Since when was demonetization effected in India?
  • Which other countries have previously taken step of demonetization?
  • Which countries have initiated the process after it was implemented in India?
  • What is your opinion on demonetization?
  • Is it a good move pertaining to the economy of the country?

General knowledge is not the only front where opinions are tested. A candidate may also be asked to give reason for appearing for UPSC CAPF exam, to give preferences and state reason for it and so on.

Preparation of UPSC CAPF Interview

Being thorough in the DAF (Detailed Application Form) submitted by the candidate after written exam is Imperative. Since most opening questions will be asked from DAF, a candidate must be well versed with his/her own DAF. Even a hobby mentioned in the application will be dissected during the UPSC CAPF interview on the lines of application, reason and inclination.

All major issues of the world should be in the cognizance of a candidate. Special attention should be paid by the candidate to the security related issues. For major world news, it is important for the candidate to learn of its implication with respect to India. Few topics, picked and chosen should be covered in such detail that any situation based question asked with regard to it must not astound the candidate. In order to prepare well, newspaper should be read and online news content should be browsed through regularly.

Going through the success stories and experience of previous years UPSC CAPF aspirants will give inkling about the actual interview. At times there are some standard questions asked every year in the interview round. Such questions if anticipated well and prepared beforehand will be a lot easier to answer during the actual interview.
