IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains 2021 Urdu Syllabus

The IAS (UPSC CSE) is conducted in three stages, Prelims, Mains and Interview. The candidates have to choose one optional subject for appearing the IAS (UPSC CSE) exam. The optional paper has a significant role in deciding the ranking of the candidates in the Civil Service Exam. As per the current trend, the success rate of literature subjects is leaping in a high rate with the past few years. The Union Public Service Commission allows the aspirants to take Urdu as one of the optional literature subjects for the IAS (UPSC CSE) Main exam.

Crash Course

Urdu is one of the 22 official languages as per the Indian Constitution. Urdu has a growing body of literary works, which includes prose, and poetry. The language is vastly used as the lingua franca. Apart from this, Urdu is also used in few parts of Hyderabad and Northern India.

You can choose Urdu language as an optional subject, if you have graduated in the literature of Urdu language as the main subject. With well-planned strategies, you can easily score well in the Urdu literature. Interest should be the prime criteria for choosing any optional. Each Urdu paper consists of 250 marks. The answers should be written in the Persian script.

Development of Urdu Language

  • Development of Indo-Aryan
    • Old Indo-Aryan
    • Middle Indo-Aryan
    • New Indo-Aryan
  • Western Hindi and its dialects Brij Bhasha Khadi Boli, Haryanavi Kannauji, Bundeli-Theories about the origin of Urdu Language
  • Dakhani Urdu-Origin and development, its significant linguistic features.
  • Social and Cultural roots of Urdu language and its distinctive features. Script, Phonology, Morphology, Vocabulary.

Section B

  • Genres and their development :
    • Poetry: Ghazal, Masnavi, Qasida, Marsia, Rubai, Jadid Nazm,
    • Prose: Novel, Short Story, Dastan, Drama, Inshaiya, Khutoot, Biography.
  • Significant features of :
    • Deccani, Delhi and Lucknow schools
    • Sir Syed movement, Romantic movement, Progressive movement, Modernism.
  • Literary Criticism and its development with reference to Hali, Shibli, Kaleemuddin Ahmad, Ehtisham Hussain, Ale-Ahmad Suroor.
  • Essay writing (covering literary and imaginative topics)

IAS Mains Urdu Paper 2

Answers must be written in Urdu

This paper will require first-hand reading of the texts prescribed and will be designed to test the candidate’s critical ability.
