The Konkani language is one of the optional subjects offered for the 2 optional papers in the IAS (UPSC CSE) Main Exam. Candidates who are familiar with Konkani Literature will find this subject suitable as an optional regional language paper.. Interest is the prime criteria for choosing any language as optional. Each Konkani paper consists of 250 marks. The duration for each Konkani mains paper is 3 hours.

As per the latest news for 2021, the notification for IAS (UPSC CSE) will be released anytime soon, but the exam dates for prelims remain unchanged and on June 27, 2021.

Who should opt for Konkani in IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains?

Candidates who have studied the Konkani literature can opt for it as an optional subject in the IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains Exam. Some of the factors that one must account for before choosing Konkani as an optional subject are:

Advantages of choosing Konkani

  • Lesser competition as less number of aspirants chooses literature (Konkani included) as an optional.
  • Stress reliever as an interest in the subject can work as a therapy.
  • Quality of answers as there is no limitation to different kinds of answers.
  • Updation in the syllabus is rare
  • Essay writing and interviews won’t pose much of a problem as the amount of reading will help with these.

Disadvantages of choosing Konkani

  • Subjective Nature of the answers can lead to less scoring at times if your views do not match with the evaluator.
  • Lack of resources
  • No syllabus overlap with GS papers

IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains Konkani Paper 1 Syllabus

Section A - History of  the Konkani Language :

  • Origin and development of the language and influences on it.
  • Major variants of Konkani and their linguistic features.
  • Grammatical and lexicographic work in Konkani, including a study of cases, adverbs, indeclinables and voices.
  • Old Standard Konkani, new Standard and standardisation problems.

Section B - History of Konkani literature:

Candidates would be expected to be wel-acquainted with Konkani literature and its social and cultural background and consider the problems and issues arising out of them.

  • History of Konkani literature from its probable source to the present times, with emphasis on its major works, writers and movements.
  • Social and cultural background of the making of Konkani literature from time to time.
  • Indian and Western influences on Konkani literature from the earliest to modern times.
  • Modern literary trends in the various genres and regions including a study of Konkani folklore.
