IAS Prelims 2018 is scheduled on June 3, 2018. The IAS Prelims is the first stage of the civil services examination conducted by the UPSC. Here are some highlights about the upcoming preliminary level of prestigious examination.

  • The exam will comrpise 2 offline objective papers of 200 marks each.
  • Paper 1 is considered for Merit Preparation, whereas Paper 2 is only qualifying in nature.
  • Candidates qualifying in the IAS Prelims have to apply for the IAS Mains 2018 (followed by interview).

The IAS Prelims Exam Pattern is based on the Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) format with 2 mandatory papers of 200 marks each. Civil Services examination is conducted to recruit candidates for 19 highly reputable Group A & 5 Group B civil service posts.

IAS Prelims 2018 Exam Dates

UPSC will release the notification for IAS Prelims during the last week of April 2018. UPSC will conduct the IAS Prelims Examination on June 3, 2018. IAS Prelims 2018 Eligibility 

UPSC has set certain IAS Prelims Eligibility criteria that the candidates appearing for the examination are obliged to fulfill. The IAS Prelims Eligibility for 2018 includes the academic qualification, age limit, number of attempts, physical standards, and citizenship criteria. Below given are only a few important eligibility criteria required for the examination. The candidates have to go through the complete & detailed set of eligibility criteria.

  1. IAS Prelims Eligibility Academic Qualification: The candidates must be a graduate from
  • Any of the Universities included in the act of Central or State Legislature of India or
  • Institutes established by Act of Parliament or
  • A deemed University as per the University Grants Commission Act.
  1. IAS Prelims Eligibility Age limit: The candidate must be between 21 years to 32 years to be eligible for the IAS Exam. However, there are certain relaxations applicable to the candidates of various categories in case of age limit criteria.
  2.  IAS Prelims Eligibility Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India or satisfy any one of the following citizenship criteria:
  • Citizen of India
  • Citizen of Nepal
  • Citizen of Bhutan

  1. Number of Attempts: A maximum of 6 attempts is allowed. But for the candidates of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the criterion of the number of attempts is not applicable.

IAS Prelims 2018 Application Form

The candidates wishing to apply for the Civil services Examination have to first apply for IAS Prelims. The IAS Prelims 2018 Application Form will be available from the last week of April 2018. There are a few significant points regarding the filling of IAS Prelims Application Form which are mentioned below:

  1. The aspirants have to fill the IAS Prelims Application Form online on the official website of UPSC (upsc.nic.).
  2. It is advisable that the applicants fill a single application form.
  3. In the case, they submit multiple applications, they have to ensure that the application with higher Registration ID (RID) is complete in all respects and is without any flaw.
  4. For candidates who are in the Government Service, Government owned industrial undertakings or other similar organizations or in private employment, they have to submit their applications directly to the Commission.
  5. They also have to submit an undertaking stating that they have informed their employer about the same. If in any case, the Commission receives any communication from the employer against the candidate applying to the examination, the candidate's application will be rejected.
  6. The candidates have to choose the IAS Prelims 2018 Exam Center in the IAS prelims Application Form.
  7. Along with the applicants’ general details included in the IAS Prelims 2018 Application Form, the candidates have to fill the following details in the IAS Prelims 2018 Application Form:
  • IAS Mains Exam Centers and Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination Center
  • Optional subject to be selected for the examination,
  • The medium of examination for IAS Mains Examination
  • Compulsory Indian Language for IAS Mains Examination

The process of filling the IAS Prelims Application Form is summarized below:

IAS Prelims Application Form PART I

Step 1 Registration for Part I: Enter the details Name, Gender, Category, Nationality and other personal details.

Step 2 Payment of Application: Select the payment mode.

  • If the mode is offline then, downloads the Pay-in-slip and pay in cash at the nearest branch of SBI.
  • If the payment mode is Online mode pay through debit/credit card or net banking.

IAS Prelims Application Form PART II

Step 3 Registration for Part II: Complete the other details of the IAS Application form.

Step 4 Uploading the Images: Upload the photograph & signature in accordance with the given specifications. With this, the IAS Prelims Application Form is completed. The applicants can finally submit the application form & note the Reg ID. 

IAS Prelims 2018 Application Fee

The candidates should remit a fee of INR 100 Rupees One Hundred only. There is an exception for the SC/ST/ Female/Physically Handicapped candidates and they need not pay the fee.

The candidates can remit the fee either by depositing the money in any branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of State Bank of India/State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/ State Bank of Patiala/State Bank of Travancore or by using any Visa/Master Credit/ Debit Card.

IAS Prelims 2018 Admit Card

UPSC will issue the IAS Prelims 2018 Admit Card 3 weeks before the commencement of the IAS Prelims 2018. The IAS Prelims Admit Card will be issued to those applicants who are considered eligible for the IAS Prelims 2018 based on the application form they have submitted.

The IAS Prelims 2018 Admit Card will be available online on the official website of UPSC ( The examination authority will not send the IAS Prelims 2018 e-admission certificate by post.

If the applicants do not receive the admit card 3 weeks before the Examination, they should immediately contact the Commission at the Facilitation Counter located in the Commission’s Office either in person. Otherwise, they can address the same issue over the phone at the following numbers:

If the candidate does not receive any response even after addressing the issue, then the candidate will be solely responsible for the non-receipt of the IAS Prelims 2018 Admit Card.

Note: Receipt of admit card does ensure their eligibility for the entire civil service examination as the complete verification of eligibility is conducted by the commission only after the candidate has qualified for the IAS Mains 2018.

Any correspondence or query to the commission will be accepted only if they contain the following particulars completely:

  • Name and year of the examination.
  • Registration ID (RID)
  • Roll Number (if received)
  • Name of candidate (in full and in block letters)
  • Complete postal address as given in the application.

IAS Prelims 2018 Exam Centers

The applicants have to fill the IAS Prelims 2018 Exam Center choice while filling the part II of the IAS Prelims Application Form. There are different sets of exam centers for both IAS Prelims & IAS Mains. The availability of the exam centers is based on the first cum first Allot basis.  There is a total of 72 IAS Prelims 2018 Exam centers. It is advisable that the applicants fill the application form as early as possible to get the center of their choice because once the center outnumbers the number of candidates the center option freezes and the applicants cannot select the center anymore.

IAS Prelims 2018 Exam Pattern

The IAS Prelims 2018 Exam Pattern is based on the MCQ format. The IAS Prelims which is a screening test for IAS Mains 2018 consists of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. The candidates can go through the most important highlights of the IAS Prelims Exam Pattern in the table below:

Note: General Studies Paper (Paper II) is a qualifying paper. The minimum qualifying marks are 33%.

IAS Prelims 2018 Result

The IAS Prelims Result is usually announced one month after the examination has been conducted. The tentative date of IAS Prelims 2017 is June 3, 2018. Hence the IAS Prelims 2018 Result will be declared by the month of September. The candidates have to access their IAS Prelims Result from the official website of UPSC. The candidates have to download the pdf and check for their roll no to obtain their scores.

IAS Exam Selection Process

The IAS Examination is a 3 staged examination, the first stage being the IAS Prelims. The candidates qualifying the IAS Prelims have to undergo the IAS Examination Selection process summarized below;

The total marks of Paper I of IAS Prelims along with the minimum qualifying marks of 33 % in case of Paper II is considered for shortlisting candidates for the IAS Main.

IAS Mains

The IAS Main Examination consists of two qualifying papers and 7 papers that are to be counted for merit.

Interview or Personality Test

The interview or personality test is the ultimate stage of the Civil Service examination. Those candidates who have qualified the IAS Mains minimum qualifying marks and the IAS Main Cut off will be further intimidated individually for the interview. The interview is a rigorous selection process where the candidates are personally assessed on multiple aspects that are required to become an ideal civil servant.
