UPSC CDS 2018: Officer Entry Pay scale and Allowances

CDS is conducted twice a year for recruitment of Permanent Commissioned Officers for Indian Armed Forces. CDS, being a recruitment examination, requires candidates to look into the pay scale, allowances, facilities that are applicable to the respective posts.

On an average, 61 varieties of facilities, benefits, and allowances are offered to Army in general. After 6th and 7th pay commission, pay scale offered has been increased. In this article we will cover the payband, grade pay and several benefits offered to Top Officers in INA, IMA and AFA.

CDS 2018 Pay Scale

After the implementation of the 6th pay commission, CDS Pay scale had undergone an increase along with the introduction of many other allowances. CDS aspirants can go through the Pay Scale of Army Officers and equivalent ranks in Air Force and Navy from the table given below:

CDS 2018 Grade Pay

The officers recruited through CDS also enjoy the various perks and promotions. The promotion period has been reduced and the time scale of promotion is increased up to the rank of Colonel (equivalent). The rank of Lieutenant Col (TS) has been terminated.

As a part of Military Service Pay (MSP), the officers ranking from Lieutenant to Brigadier are entitled to the fixed sum of INR 6000/-.

Criteria for promotion: The promotion of Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel occurs in accordance with the timescale. It also depends on the basis of fulfillment of the required service condition.

Stipend during training at Service Academy: The UPSC CDS qualified officers receive a certain amount of stipend during the training session at the service academy. The fixed Stipend during the entire training period is INR 21,000/- per month (INR 15,600/- as pay in Pay Band plus Grade Pay of INR 5,400/-).

CDS 2018 Qualification Pay and Grant

The government pays a lump sum qualification grant to the officers recruited through UPSC CDS and also possessing certain prescribed qualifications. The UPSC CDS Qualification grant amounts to INR 6000/-, 9000/-, 15000/- or 20,000/- applicable according to the qualification of the officers.  The USC CDS Qualification grant according to the officer rank is detailed below:

  1. Master Aviation Instructor INR 500/- p.m.
  2. Senior Aviation Instructor Class I – INR​ 400/- p.m.
  3. Senior Aviation Instructor Class II – INR 280/- p.m.
  4. Aviators holding Master Green Card – INR 400/- p.m.
  5. Aviators holding Green Card – INR 280/- p.m.

CDS Officers’ Allowances

The UPSC CDS Allowances specific to the defence force has undergone an enhancement of 50%. The Government of State of Sikkim has announced a cash incentive of Rs.1.5 lac for the successful candidates of Sikkim in all Officers entry scheme.

In the case of the Army Aviators (Pilots) who serve the Army Aviation Corps are entitled to the following range of allowances described below:

  1. Brigadier and above INR 10,500/-
  2. Major to Colonel INR 14,000/-
  3. Captain and Equivalent INR 11,000/-
  4. Lt. and Equivalent INR 9,000/-

The UPSC CDS aspirants should go through the various categories of allowances that the UPSC CDS Officers are entitled to:

  1. UPSC CDS Dearness Allowances (DA):  Same rate and applicable under the same conditions as that of are the Civilian Gazetted Officers from time to time.
  2. UPSC CDS Kit maintenance allowance: INR 400/- per month
  3. UPSC CDS Field Area Allowance: On the basis of the field areas that the UPSC CDS Officers are posted to, they enjoy the compensatory Field Area Allowance.
  • The Compensatory Highly active field allowance rates are INR 6,780/- to INR 8,400/- p.m.
  • Compensatory Field Area Allowance at the rate of INR 4,200/- to INR 5,200/- p.m.
  • Compensatory Modified Field Area Allowance at the rate of INR 1,600/- to INR 2,000/- p.m.
  • Additionally, officers posted to the areas situated at a height of 9,000 ft. and above enjoy an extra High Altitude Allowance in the range of INR 1,060 p.m. to INR 11,200 pm. The amount is decided on the basis of the officer rank and place of posting.
  • Siachen Allowance:  A rate of INR 14000/- per month is granted to the officers of all ranks in addition to the Compensatory Field Area Allowance. However, a rule applied to this allowance is that it is not admissible along with other High Altitude / Uncongenial climate allowance.
  1. Uniform allowance: For a one-time kit, the Initial allowance received by the UPSC CDS officers is INR 14000/- and INR 3,000/- for every three years. The officers also receive free rations.
  2. Transport allowance: The transport allowance is applicable in two categories:
  • In A-1/A class cities INR 3,200/- + DA thereon p.m.
  • At other places INR 1,600/- + DA thereon p.m.
