CDS I 2018 is to be held on February 4, 2018. Since there are hardly any days left for the preparation, we bring you some of the important tips and tricks to fare well in the exam and score better. As per the UPSC defined CDS 2018 Exam Pattern, candidates must sit for the written exam and appear in SSB round for selection.

The written test has 3 subjects namely, English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. Get a grip over all the current events to prepare for General Knowledge section. With few days left in hand, candidates must focus on revising all the important sections and topics. Solve as many CDS Practice Papers as you can and analyze your performance.

The tips and tricks provided here will help the candidates to boost their morale and push their confidence level. All the candidates are advised to remain stress free at last minute. Candidates clearing the exam will proceed to appear for SSB. Here are a few last minute tips to prepare for CDS.

CDS 2018: Section wise preparation tips

CDS I 2018 exam consists of three papers for INA, IMA & AFA and two papers for OTA applicants. Every paper of CDS 2018 carries 100 marks. CDS exam has a provision of negative marking. One-third marks will be deducted for wrong answers. Candidates need to solve every paper in the duration of two hours.


The English paper consists of 120 questions and it will be of 100 marks. The paper will be objective in nature. This paper will test the candidate’s basic understanding of English language. will comprise basic grammar, spotting error, antonyms, synonyms, arrangement of sentences etc.

  • Candidates with habit of reading of newspaper on daily basis. They should revise all the newspaper from last month. It improves not only vocabulary but also knowledge about the subject.
  • Candidates can refer the basic grammar books to clear the concepts like Raymond Murphy is one of the best book for basic grammar.
  • They must revise their notes of English in which they have been noted important words and their synonyms, antonyms & meaning.
  • They should try to solve the last year question paper by which they can get a fair idea of what to except in paper.

General Knowledge

General Knowledge paper in CDS 2018 will consist of 120 questions. The paper will be of 100 marks. This paper will test the static knowledge of candidates on various subjects including current affairs, history, politics, geography etc.

  • Candidates must have the knowledge of latest happenings in and around the world.
  • Read magazines that varied topics like sports, awardees, art, literature, science etc.

Elementary Mathematics

Elementary Mathematics consists of 100 questions in CDS exam. Each question carry one marks. This paper will cover topics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, statistics etc. Usually, the standard of the paper is that of Intermediate.   • Revise all the topics as per CDS syllabus. Memorize all the formulaes of trigonometry & mensuration.
  • Candidates need to pick up the topics that they are strong at and practice thoroughly. After that, they can move on the difficult ones.

CDS I 2018: Preparation Strategy

Proper Planning: Candidate should study in a planned manner. They need to prepare a strategy for CDS exam for each paper.

Revision: Revise all your formulae & techniques for Mathematics. Revise the mnemonics for General Knowledge techniques as it is easily forgettable. Candidates will have to remember each and every detail that they have studied throughout their preparation.

Do not prepare any new topic: Studying new topics at the last minute can spoil your whole preparation.

Time Management: The proper management of time is very important for every competitive exam. The paper is designed in such a way they will have to maintain their speed.

Mind the cut off: Go through the last year CDS cutoff and analyze the questions before attempting the paper, to avoid disqualification on merit basis.

Don’t stress: Exam is held to check also the stress level of the candidates. Don’t be panic and spoil your papers. Be confident and try to give your 110%. Mark only those questions for which you’re sure else the wrong marked answer may result in negative marking.

Sleep well: A great sleep before the day of exam can really be helpful. Don’t try to mug up your formulae as a night owl.
